Positive About Emmy
Hi, I found thise communtiy while I was randomly searching for something interesting and In joined because it seemed like a good community to have. I don't know what it is about Emmy Rossum that divides people and invokes such strong reactions. People either seem to worship the ground she walks on or they make her out to be some kind of slug who crawled up from the depths of the earth to inflict hidiousness on innocent movie goers! Personally I think it's silly to have such extreme reactions over an actress but c'est la vie.|
My own opinion? I think she's talented. She's not the most talented person who ever walked the face of the earth but I don't think she got where she is soley based on her looks as some people claim. I really though that given what the film version of The Phantom of the Opera was, she did a nice job. I don't think she would have pulled it of on stage but for the medium she was right. She has a beautiful voice but I can't figure out who people feel the need to compare her to Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Renee Fleming, Kiri Te Kinawa or a million other opera singers. She's not an opera singer, she played one in a movie! To compare her to one is like comparing apples and oranges. The score of Phantom is not opera- it's actually closer to pop, and while Emmy had her vocal flaws (breathiness, diction and some sliding and scooping) she was far from the worst Christine I've heard. Nor is she the best. I also think that she managed to convey what she needed to in the role- Christine is young, confused, and vulberable. I got all of that from her performance. I havben't seen all of her films, but I was impressed with her performances in Songcatcher, Passionada, and Mystic River. I found Nola and Happy Now enjoyable though not particularly memorable, and I wasn't crazy about The Day After Tomorrow. I haven't seen Poseidon. In Nola and Songcatcher she confirms that she has a good voice and with more training and some time she'll be a very good singer someday. She definately proved she can act in several films, and I look foreward to seeing what she comes up with in the future.
As a person? I don't know her and I won't say if she's smart, dumb, arrogant, humble, etc. From what interviews I've read I think she comes off as intelligent and confident. I get a bit annoyed by a lot of the false modesty that you hear from other actresses so it's kind of refreshing to see someone who seems to know that she has talent and not feel the need to apologize for being beautiful. But how much can you tell from interviews?
Anyway, I look forward to the opportunity to discuss Emmy's work neutrally and objectively without fear of being bashed for not being sufficiently worshipful or accused of being a dumb fangirl.
